For the 2023 Hornbill Award, the prize money of RM140,000 was generated from surplus funds of the National Climate Governance Summit 2023. Rainforest conservation NGO 1StopBorneo Wildlife walked away with the grand prize of RM100,000. A special award of RM40,000 was further awarded to Johor-based environmental education club Kelab Alami Mukim Tanjung Kupang.

About Hornbill Award

Climate Governance Malaysia (CGM) inaugurated The Hornbill Award Competition in 2021, with the support of corporate sponsors Areca Capital, Astro, Better Malaysia Foundation, CIMB Foundation, Tenaga Nasional, Yayasan Hasanah, Yayasan Sime Darby, audit and consulting firm PwC, as well as content and media houses Eco-Business and IslamicMarkets.com.

The winner of the Hornbill Award will be chosen from either a Non-Governmental Organization (NGO) or Civil Society Organization (CSO) and cash prizes will be given to fund an innovative proposal according to the theme identified for the competition. 
 

In 2021, we invited NGOs/CSOs to focus on the area of Conservation, dealing with the preservation and management of biodiversity and natural resources. It is a discipline that is emerging rapidly as a result of the accelerating deterioration of natural systems and the mass extinction of endangered species.

This initiative would be aligned to the National Biodiversity Policy's Target 17 which anticipates that by 2025, there will be a significant increase in funds and resources mobilised for the conservation of biodiversity from both government and non-government sources and specifically, Action 17.1, which recognises the need to develop coordinated partnerships with the private sector to channel funds to priority biodiversity conservation projects.

In addition, The Hornbill Award will provide an opportunity for businesses to support:

• Sustainability and climate resilience; 

• Malaysia’s commitment, under the Paris Agreement, to reduce Greenhouse Gas (GHG) emissions by 45% by 2030 in relation to our 2005 emissions intensity of GDP, and in addition, to maintain at least 50% level of forest & tree conservation; and 

• Commitment to UN Sustainable Development Goals, namely SDG13 (Climate Action), SDG14 (Life Below Water), SDG15 (Life On Land) and SDG17 (Partnership for the Goals). 

 

CGM undertakes to provide the shortlisted entities access to a global platform to showcase their work (which in 2021 was Climate Week NYC, the largest global climate event of the year), giving them an opportunity to promote their good work and attract funders for projects in climate action and biodiversity conservation.

 

This initiative will allow different stakeholders to form a collective towards concerted action on climate change and biodiversity conservation. 

​

CGM’s aspirations are that the funded project will deliver long-term benefits on biodiversity, which in turn will impact the environment, the health and livelihoods of the communities in the areas affected by the project.

About the Winners

Bringing Back Our Rare Animals (BORA) was voted as the inaugural winner of the Hornbill Award 2021 and they won RM105,000. 

No competition was held in 2022 due to the Covid-19 pandemic.
